In Mathews County of Virginia, off the coast of Gloucester, is the small, unassuming town of Diggs. It’s a cozy little place, surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, offering coastal views and respite. It seems normal, boring in fact. But don’t let the views fool you! For if you travel down the Beach Haven Road just outside of town, you come to a 50-acre patch of dense woodland. The Old House Woods is so full of paranormal activity and apparitions that it may be the most haunted woods in America. Where else can you find ghost pirates searching for their lost gold? British Redcoats stalking the night? Armored skeletons asking for directions and even…headless ghost cows?
The Old House Woods was a scary place when the colonists came to this country. The dense woods along the ocean were so thick the sky couldn’t be seen through the tree limbs. It was the perfect port for men to hide and lay low from the law. Thieves and pirates were so notorious in the area that travelers were warned to stay away from the woods. The woods were used as a secret port by both Revolutionary sailors and Civil War ones.
The woods were filled with stories of thievery and murder before the first incident even occurred. The name Old House Woods actually reflected the fact that in the late 1700s an old colonial building stood in the middle of the woods. It was abandoned and believed to be full of angry spirits. The house, called the Frannie Knight house, spontaneously caught on fire. Then, it to put itself back out with no intervention. Years later, the same house caught fire again. But, this time it allowed itself to reduce the house to dust. The forest has since taken the house’s remains back.

The Legend of the flying dog, know as Aralez.
The aralez are most prominently associated with the story of the legendary Armenian king Ara the Handsome. According to this legend, the Assyrian queen Semiramis (Shamiram) called on the aralez to lick the wounds of and revive Ara the Handsome after he was killed in battle. By popular interpretation, this was the origin of the word aralez, from the name "Ara" and lez, the root of the word lizel 'to lick'. According to the Armenian history attributed to Faustus of Byzantium, after Mushegh Mamikonian was killed, his relatives placed his corpse on a tower, hoping that the aralezes would revive him.This indicates that belief in the aralez was still current in fourth- and fifth-century Armenia, following the Christianization of the country.

the Sachs Covered Bridge Gettysburg
Built in 1852 by David S. Stoner, the Sachs Covered Bridge extends 100 feet and serves to connect land separated by Gettysburg’s Marsh Creek. For more than a century it allowed vehicles and pedestrians access in their travels.
However, due to weakening abutments over the decades, this beautiful historic landmark was closed to all automobiles by 1968. Almost 30 years later, flooding caused the bridge to be shaken from its foundation, requiring over half a million dollars to fully restore it with steel support beams.
While certainly more structurally sound than ever, it is today open only to foot traffic. Throughout the years, township officials considered reopening the bridge for vehicular use. But each time, the bridge’s preservation outweighed any change in operation.
When the Battle of Gettysburg broke out in July of 1863, the town of Gettysburg was turned upside down by the brutality that permeated the land. Since a vast majority of Union and Confederate soldiers were young men, there were instances that saw some of them attempt to abandon their posts and go into hiding.
One such occasion involved three Confederate troops who tried to evade the war by donning Union attire. Marching with the North near Sachs Covered Bridge, they were soon discovered as belonging to the South and were promptly made an example.
It’s argued as to whether they were spies, deserters, or outright traitors. Regardless, the three young men were hanged from the bridge’s wooden support beams, ensuring that any Confederates passing through would see the executed men, thereby serving as a warning.
Sadly, this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the harrowing accounts that took place during the infamous Battle of Gettysburg. As a part of the American Civil War, it saw tens of thousands of lives lost in the line of duty.

The Loveland Castle, located in Loveland, is another Ohio landmark that is said to be haunted. Built in the 1920s by a man named Harry D. Andrews, the castle has an eerie, medieval charm. Andrews, who dedicated his life to creating the castle, is said to still haunt the property, along with the spirits of his family members. Visitors have reported hearing strange sounds coming from the castle, as well as seeing shadowy figures in the windows. The castle’s dark, historic past has made it a prime location for those interested in exploring Ohio’s haunted heritage.
